Covina-Valley Unified School District

What’s The Big Deal

ABOUT ATTENDANCE?

Legally: The Compulsory Education Law requires all children between the ages of 6 and 18 to attend school on a consistent and regular basis. It is the parent’s responsibility to make sure their children are in school. It is the law!

A+ Academically: High levels of attendance boost academic performance. Students keep current in their classrooms, demonstrate a commitment to their own education, and learn great things!

Financially: Revenue for California schools is generated by student attendance. It’s all about ADA (Average Daily Attendance).

It’s as simple as this: When a student is present for any portion of a school day (even 5 minutes!), funds are generated (approx. $31 per day). When a student is absent all day for any reason (ill, excused, not excused, it doesn’t matter), funds are not generated. During the 2008-09 school year, Covina-Valley Unified School District totaled:

108,065 Absences

That’s about 600 absences per day… $3.4 million in lost revenue to the District!

Absences are expensive both academically and financially.

If your child must stay home from school, please consider a voluntary donation of $31 (or whatever is comfortable) for the day of lost revenue. Checks may be payable to C-VUSD and delivered or mailed to your school site or the District office at 519 E. Badillo Street, Covina, 91723.

Please contact your school site as soon possible to report your student’s absence.

Thank you!

Dear Colt Family,

Get ready for a great year at Covina High School! Our first day of school will begin on Monday, August 30. Offices will open at 8:00 a.m. on August 16, for registration. Our mailer home this year only contains this letter and important forms and information you will need to complete the registration process. On the day your student registers, he or she will receive a Covina Valley Unified District folder that has important information that should be reviewed together when your student brings it home. You will also receive a school calendar with important dates for the entire year and a reminder of what documents are posted on our website at www.covinahigh.net, such as our dress code and student handbook.

Our school year has been shortened this year by five days due to the budget crisis in our state. The district had to address a 6.5 million dollar deficit. Due to these cuts, staff members will receive 8-10 furlough days this year. This amounts to about a 5% salary cut for all employees. Teachers will not be attending school two days prior to school starting as they previously have, and we have shortened the end of the year by five days. School will end on Wednesday, June 8. The cost of Health and Welfare benefits to all employees was increased as well. We applaud the CUEA, CSEA, CVUSD employees and District personnel for the time they have spent to address the state of our schools in this difficult time. We are all working together to maintain positive attitudes and continue to prepare our students to be successful individuals in our community.

This year, our district is going to pilot an Aeries Parent Access Program, which will give our parents access to their students academic progress and weekly assignments. Parents will receive a password and information at a later date once this program is in place. We look forward to opening the lines of communication between our parents and teachers to help improve student achievement. Last year we introduced the PLASCO system to monitor our tardies and attendance. We saw an approximate 50% reduction in tardies throughout the school year. I want to thank parents for their cooperation and for being part of the team to help our students see the importance of being on time and not losing classroom instruction time. This year we are continuing to focus on finding ways to recoup average daily attendance money (ADA) from our attendance. We will be focusing on students who are not attending school and finding incentives to change this behavior. Please discuss the importance of attendance to school on a daily basis.

  • Remisión a SART/SARB
