Girl's Tennis 2009

This year’s Covina High Varsity Girls Tennis Team has reached the pinnacle of choices. Deciding this year’s team has been difficult for Ms. Lane, the Varsity Girls Tennis Coach. The girls have been equally fantastic in skills and qualities as people.

On Thursday, August 27, 2009, the varsity girls voted for the two captains who would lead the team to another league title. With a meeting between minds, the girls democratically voted for Kristen Nix and Stephanie Koch.
This year, with so many talented girls, the last varsity singles spot is still undecided between Nora Le, a freshman, and Micah Sarmiento, a sophomore. Their playing style is very similar, both being counterpunchers and able to hit consistently with each other. The final decision for the last spot will be decided at the El Monte game on Friday, September 11, 2009.
The Girls Varsity Tennis Team has had a four year winning streak in league, the first three years being undefeated. Last year’s varsity team barely lost one game in a tiebreaker to San Dimas, ending the undefeated streak; however, they were still league champions tied with San Dimas. This year’s team hopes to continue to stay at the top of league, hopefully alone in the winner’s circle.

JV Blurb:
With the need for a new JV tennis coach this year, Benya Pokpongkiat accepted being the JV coach. Pokpongkiat was on varsity tennis for all four years of high school at Covina High, qualifying for league finals every single year and winning in her sophomore year.
