Covina Rallies for Overtime Victory

On Wednesday, January 27th, the Covina Girls Basketball team travelled to take on cross-town rival Northview for 1st place in the Valle Vista League.  The Colts started slow as the Vikings took an early 7-0 lead, taking advantage of Covina turnovers.  The team responded with tough defense and hot shooting by Chelsea Chmela to tied the score in the 2nd quarter before trailing at the half 24-19.  The Covina defense dominated the 3rd quarter, holding Northview to 4 points and the Colts cut the deficit to one going into the 4th quarter.  Trailing by 5 with 3 minutes to play, Junior Vanessa Zapata hit perhaps the biggest shot of the season, draining a 3-pointer from the wing to pull the team within 2.  The Colts had a chance to win the game in overtime but missed a jumper in the lane, sending the game to overtime.  In the overtime period, Covina once again used swarming defensive pressure to stiffle the Viking and pulled away to win 48-43.  The team starts the 2nd round of league Friday night @ Pomona.  Game time is 5:00pm.

Colts Beat Braves and Saints, Clinch Share of Title

The Covina Girls Basketball team came away with two huge victories this past week pushing there record to 8-0 in the Valle Vista League and clinching at least a share of the league championship.  On Wednesday, the Colts played perhaps their finest game of the season, routing the visiting Baldwin Park Braves.  Every team member contributed as Covina boasted a 32-point lead in the middle of the 3rd quarter, eventually winning 51-38.  On Friday, Covina faced off with San Dimas and 6'1" center Ashley Burchfield.  The Colts struggle to stop Burchfield inside, but were able to keep the rest of the team in check with their signature zone defense.  On offense, Chelsea Chmela led the way, hitting 5 of 6 3-pointers in the 1st half and finished with a game high 23 points.  In the final week of the season, Covina takes on Ganesha and Northview.  One win would give the team the outright league championship for the 5th time in 6 years.

Colts Start Strong

The Covina High Girls Basketball team has gotten off to a nice start to their 2010 league season.  The Colts are tied for 1st with a 2-0 record after defeating Pomona and Baldwin Park last week.  On Wednesday, the team jumped out to a quick 22-0 1st quarter lead and never looked back, smashing the visiting Pomona Red Devils 55-11.  Sophomore Caroline Fa'anunu paced the Colts with a career high 12 points.  On Friday, the Colts traveled to Baldwin Park and came away with a 52-32 victory.  Covina used intense team defense and solid mistake-free offense to control the game throughout.  This week the Colts have a much more difficult task, having to travel to San Dimas on Wednesday and hosting Ganesha Friday.

Colts Fall in Consolation Championship

Last week the Covina Girls Basketball team competed in the 5th Annual Covina Classic Girls Basketball Tournament.  The team finished the tournament in 9th place with a 2-2 record.  Covina faced-off with Alta Loma in the 1st round and lost a heart-breaker as the Cougar's Sylvia Shepherd hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to defeat the Colts 51-48.  The Colts rebounded with back-to-back victories over Rowland and Charter Oak to reach the Consolation Championship against cross-town rival Northview.  Northview outplayed the Colts en route to a 15-point victory.  This week, Covina has 2 non-league contests against El Rancho and Alhambra.
