Foreign Language
The Foreign Language Department currently consists of three Spanish teachers (Ms. Patti Ferraro, Mrs. Veronica Cervantes, and Mr. Al Yerkish) and one German teacher (Mr. David Platt).
Here at Covina High students are encouraged to take a second language to be diverse. Standards for the foreign language learner include: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. By communicating in a language other than English, the students will be able to engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, and exchange opinions on a variety of topics. By learning about other cultures, students will demonstrate an understanding of the cultural differences that exist in the world. While learning about other cultures, students will reinforce and further their knowledge while making comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
The goal of the Foreign Language Department is to have instilled within the students a sense of pride and confidence in the language and culture learned so that they will use the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

The following information is for the 2008-2009 school year:
Department Goal:- We will develop two more common assessments.
- Teachers will implement new strategies learned at workshops and conferences to enhance and enrich student learning.
Smart Goals:
- At least 70% or all Foreign Language students will score at 70% or better on our common exams (mid-term/final).
- At least 50% will improve at least one letter grade on the verbal department assessment.
Anticipated Annual Performance Growth:
- Common Assessments 08-09: 80%, 09-10: 70%
- Written Assessment 08-09: 50%, 09-10: 50%
